CHINESE WORKS OF ART
A FASCINATION FOR MINIATURES: THE LINDA F. CRAWLEY COLLECTION OF CHINESE SNUFF BOTTLES
CATALOGUE FOREWORD
We are pleased to present our 2009 Chinese Works of Art catalogue, which includes 118 fine pieces. We have divided the catalogue into six sections.
The first part encompasses nephrite and jadeite objects carved in Chinese taste, mostly from the Qing dynasty, with a few pieces dating to the Ming and earlier. The second section groups scholar’s items and a few decorative
pieces. An entire section has been reserved for a small group of very good snuff bottles acquired since the publication of our last catalogue, A Fascination for Miniature: the Linda F. Crawley Collection of Chinese Snuff
Bottles, in September 2008. We have also included a group of fine wood furniture including two exceptional screens, one made of the precious zitan wood, and the other of carved cinnabar lacquer. The ceramics section groups both Ming and Qing dynasty porcelain and pottery from the Song dynasty. The statuary includes wood, stone, and earthenware from the Han to early Qing dynasty. The final two sections are of archaeological nature, witha group of metalwork, all purchased from American collection, and a small, but fine selection of small archaic jade.
Initially, we had also included a section dedicated to Chinese glass, but we decided to publish a separate catalogue to this effect, entitled Chinese Qing Dynasty Glass Treasures, A Selection from the Gadient Collection. The catalogue includes an excellent selection of glassware, with a total of sixty-four pieces ranging from the 18th to the early 20th century, and with more than a quarter bearing an imperial mark. Please feel free to contact us should you wish to acquire a copy of this catalogue.
We particularly want to thank Rosanne Chan, who always aims at perfection, and her team at CA Design in Hong Kong for the quality of their production of these catalogues, as well as the last we published in 2008. In spite of the distance between Winter Park and Hong Kong, Rosanne is able to maintain a very close communication as she develops our project to full fruition, and under much time pressure for the catalogues to be ready for Asia Week in New York, where we will be exhibiting on the 13th floor of the Fuller Building.
We hope you will enjoy this selection of Chinese artworks, and will be happy to answer any enquiry about the objects photographed and described here.
